How to Transform a Kid’s Play Area into an Adult Space in under 10 minutes

October 24, 2018

A Designer’s focus on the family can create everyday stylish spaces.

In recognition of Small Business month in October, and Awesome Mom month (I just made that up, but it should be every month!) I want to share a piece of my entrepreneur journey with you, and how being a mom has inspired me to build my niche in the popular decorating world.

I want to give my clients a room that can accommodate both playdates and date nights

When I first started Mint Decor in 2014, I had the opportunity to present my business in front of a local mom group. One mom shared a impactful story with me: Earlier that year a Designer had visited her home, and upon seeing that she had young kids, said: “Call me in 10 years, then we can work together”. At that time, I had a toddler at home and another on the way. I was living her chaos, but I don’t agree that we should just accept and succumb to the idea that a nice home and young children cannot coexist. I had designed my home in such a way that after 7pm, and a few minutes of tidying, my home could actually host adult conversation without the Paw Patrol in view. This began my passion to create beautiful family spaces. I wanted to give my clients rooms that can accommodate both playdates and date nights.

I start each new project by understanding how my clients currently use their space, and (most importantly, but often overlooked), I then ask how would they like to use their space. We fall into habits of how we use our home, and given the chance to step back and see your home through fresh eyes uncovers more efficient and enjoyable arrangements. How do we do this? Smart and stylish storage options, beautiful furniture made with practical fabrics and finishes (no sharp corners!), layers of lighting to create intimate spaces and well hung artwork are just a few of my starting points.

Yes, we love our kids and do everything we can to create a safe, inspiring and encouraging world for them to live and grow. As a designer, I love helping my clients in this pursuit. But I don’t let the designing stop there; we all work so hard each day for our families, and deserve a space in our homes where we can relax and re-inspire ourselves. Whether it be in a cozy kitchen nook at 5:30am trying to get ahead of the day, or at 9pm, sinking into a soft sofa with your feet up.

Our collaborative approach is what sets us apart in a frenetic design world. If you are looking to update your home, I would love to get to know you and the possibilities of your home.
